Laura Thomas has taught creative writing in the RC since 1999. She is also a graduate of the Creative Writing program (RC ’88). As both an instructor and a former student in the program, Thomas admires the RC’s commitment to tutorial-based instruction for creative writers. Her tutorials offer an intensive composition, critique, and revision process designed to support young writers as they develop their voice.
In addition to teaching tutorials and traditional fiction workshops, Thomas has created student community building opportunities. Her students can join an online workshop for short fiction writers. RC Creative Writing students regularly intern for the local non-profits 826michigan and Dzanc Books.
Thomas writes short fiction and is working on a novel. Her fiction explores the immoral choices moral people sometimes have to make to survive in a damaged economic, social, or family system.
