RC Forums

Urban Forum

Detroit's Eastern Market is still colorful and bustling in the winter This forum is a meeting point for students interested in organizing and development in urban communities. Our current focus is on Detroit. We cover issues of systematic change, the root causes of inequality, and ways that students can get involved. An emphasis on understanding the historical and cultural influences that has shaped each community, along with a frank assessment of the current state of each community, form the foundation of our inquiry. This semester, we plan to explore in-depth topics surrounding Detroit, the different manifestations of community organizing and development, as well as become invested in a specific service project.

We need your help: the RC has a rich tradition of service in communities around the world, and we want to hear your stories. You can start participating by emailing forum leader Patrick Cooper-McCann at pcooperm@umich.edu. Winter meetings are scheduled on alternating Monday evenings from 6 - 8pm.
