Study Abroad

Because RC students have the advantage of participating in the intensive language programs, most learn how to engage the world around them in unique substantive ways. RC students don’t just enroll in foreign universities, they explore and interact with the people and culture in challenging ways.

Here are some examples of the unique ways RC students travel and learn from the world.

  • Janet Hegman Shier’s German Theater course spent a week in Berlin in 2005, a week in Munich in 2003 and years before watching German plays and absorbing German culture and contemporary issues—and in 2004, she designed her own GIEU program.
  • Students of Ian Robinson have traveled with him to the Mexican border village of Nogales to study first-hand the economic circumstances of border workers.
  • The RC Drama Program found itself in Moscow in May 2005—not only to experience Russian history and culture, but to perform a unique and original play at the International Chekhov Festival for Russian audiences.
  • And current RC senior, Isabelle Carbonil, is making a video documentary in Vietnam, combining her skills and interests in photography and film with her passion for social justice. Click here for a PDF of her recent travelogues.

Of course, RC students also have the same exciting abroad opportunities that are available to all LSA students through the Office of International Programs (OIP) and the International Institute. These are wonderful U of M resources so please check them out as well.

In addition, RC students can also apply directly to the RC for funding support for their abroad projects.

**Applications for 2007 will be posted in late fall 2006.
