(re)Introducing the Social Theory and Practice Concentration

The Residential College's unique Social Science program has been revamped, and the reveal of its new name and requirements was this week: it's now the Social Theory and Practice concentration.

The core of the curriculum is a new course, Understanding Power, Theorizing Knowledge, combined with a one credit class that guides you towards an Individual Concentration Proposal. The ICP is your justification of a course of study in the Social Sciences. It lays out intellectual rationale for the courses you want to take and describes the senior project you may complete.

The capstone of the Social Theory and Practice concentration is an independent research project -- either a project completed in the community, along with reflection and analysis, or a thesis, possibly written for University of Michigan Honors. A faculty mentor will guide you through the process, helping you understand your field but also giving you the freedom to direct your own work.

RC faculty involved in the program have backgrounds ranging from History to Economics, Women's Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Urban Studies, Education... Take a look at the concentration page for a full list.

The Social Theory and Practice concentration is only open to Residential College students.
