RC Faculty moderate at Heart of the City: Black Urban Life on The Wire

Stephen M. Ward and Angela D. Dillard, both professors of Afroamerican and African Studies and in the Residential College, are moderating two panels at Heart of the City: Black Urban Life on The Wire. The symposium, hosted by the Black Humanities Collective and the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies, explores, critiques, and extends themes from The Wire, HBO's series on urban Baltimore.

Panels are being held this Friday, January 30.

Stephen Ward is moderating a panel on "Teaching on The Wire." Panelists examine social problems of teaching, including inequality, pedagogy, and education's intersection with "the Street".

Dr. Ward's research focuses on African American political thought and social movements since the 1960s. He teaches in the Residential College's Social Theory and Practice major (some of his classes include "Urban and Community Studies I" and "History of Detroit in the 20th Century"). Dr. Ward also serves as coordinator of the RC's Urban Community Studies minor and helped establish the College's Semester in Detroit program.

Angela Dillard is moderating a panel on Race, Labor, and Affect in the Neoliberal City. Presenters in the session use themes from The Wire to analyze the urban effects of  neoliberal politics.

Dr. Dillard is currently co-teaching teaching the RC's Social Theory and Practice gateway course, "Theorizing Knowledge in the Social Sciences" (some past courses have included “Varieties of Conservatism” and “Race and Science Fiction”). Her research focuses on conservative thought and the emergence, deployment, and evolution political ideologies.
