Semester in Detroit (SiD) APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
For Winter 2010 Semester

Eligibility
The Semester in Detroit program accepts undergraduate students from all schools and majors at the University of Michigan.  Completion of the program plus one additional required course will meet the requirements for a minor in Urban and Community Studies through the College of Literature, Science and the Arts.  The program is open to students who have reached at least sophomore status by the time they participate.  The most successful program participants typically have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA [Note: those with less than a 3.0 GPA are still eligible to apply but must explain their particular situation.]  Applicants should have a strong interest in the city of Detroit and in community-service learning.

Prerequisites
There are two prerequisites for Semester in Detroit: 1) a one-credit urban planning mini-course on Detroit that will occur in November 2009, and 2) participation in five sessions of the Ginsberg Center’s Learning from the Community workshop series.  The fall 2009 semester schedule will be available in early September 2009.

Important dates:

Email your application (or submit a hard copy along with required supplementary materials) between the period Tuesday, September 8, 2009 and Wednesday, September 30, 2009 to Craig Regester, Associate Director (see contact info below).  Only 25 students will be allowed into the program. If the program becomes full, a wait-list will be used based on the order by which students applied and were accepted into the program.  Applicants will be notified whether they have been accepted into the program in early October, 2009.  Enrollment in the program and an application for housing will be due October 30, 2009.

The following documents must be submitted to SiD by the application deadline.

  • A completed application
  • An unofficial transcript
  • At least one letter of reference (two are preferred) from professors or graduate student instructors.  Please collect these from your references in sealed envelopes that the references have signed across the seal.  Submit these with your application.
  • A two to three-page essay.  Please describe (1) how you hope the Semester in Detroit experience will enrich your college education, (2) how your previous experiences make you well-suited for this program, and (3) how a community-based internship would fit with your academic interests and your career aspirations.
  • Optional resumé
